Common Problems
Well aligned teeth are essential for overall oral health, yet it is rare that our teeth develop the “perfect bite” on their own. Causes of “bad bites” or malocclusion include genetics, thumb or finger sucking, mouth breathing, early or late loss of deciduous (baby) teeth, abnormal swallowing habits, poor dental hygiene, accidents or poor nutrition. Whatever the cause, malocclusions left untreated can affect chewing, oral hygiene, speech, appearance and self-esteem.
-
Upper Front Teeth Protrusion
This type of bite impacts the appearance and function of your teeth. It is characterized by the upper teeth protruding too far forward. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping.
-
Underbite
Characterized by the lower jaw extending out, causing the lower front teeth to sit in front of the upper front teeth.
-
Spacing
Spacing problems caused by missing teeth create issues with esthetics and function.
-
Crowding
Crowding occurs when teeth have insufficient room in the arch. Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Crowding can often be corrected by expansion and many times tooth removal can be avoided.
-
Crossbite
The upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth. This may cause excessive wear on the teeth, misaligned jaw growth and TMJ (jaw joint) clicking and dysfunction.
-
Overbite (Overjet)
The upper front teeth extend out over the lower front teeth. As a result, the posterior teeth may not bite together correctly which can lead to excessive wear on the molars. The lower incisors often bite into the palate (roof of the mouth) which can result in gum recession.
-
Openbite
Proper chewing is hindered by this type of bite, in which the upper and lower front teeth do not overlap. Openbite may cause a number of problems including excessive wear on the posterior teeth, tongue thrust and speech impediments. This can cause the lower front teeth to bite into the palate (roof of the mouth).
-
Dental Midlines Not Matched
This type of problem may be the result of a jaw asymmetry and an indicator of bite problems. Tooth size differences as well as missing teeth can also cause midline discrepancies.

The Solution
The goal of orthodontics is to optimize the position of teeth, jaws, joints and chewing muscles. People of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment and we tailor our extensive treatment options to suit your unique situation. Braces have come a long way since the days of bulky metal “train tracks”. Discreet treatment options, like Incognito™ Hidden Braces, are worth considering. In addition, traditional braces and Invisalign are always an option.
SPEED Braces™
SPEED Braces are up to 3 times smaller than standard braces and have a small jewel-like appearance. They won’t discolour like ‘clear’ braces or the coloured elastics found on standard braces. SPEED Braces are highly efficient at straightening teeth and treatment times are often reduced.
Cosmetic Braces
In addition to traditional metal braces, we also offer clear ceramic braces. Their cosmetic appeal makes them a very popular choice for teens and adults alike, however ceramic brackets are more fragile than metal brackets and the elastic ties may discolour between orthodontic visits.
Invisalign™
The Invisalign™ System is a series of clear overlay templates—called aligners that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This system is available to teens and adult patients with certain orthodontic bite problems. Ask us if you are a candidate for the Invisalign™ system.
Incognito™
100% customized and 100% hidden, Incognito™ braces are mounted on the back of your teeth, allowing you to smile confidently throughout treatment without anyone knowing you’re wearing braces. Using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), 3D printing technology and robotics, Incognito is made just for you and is the most discreet solution for any age.
